My guess is that young Yamada is only able to save Chika, and Amamiya gets left behind. That's why Yamada and Chika are on such familiar terms - they've spent the next 10 years together, and also where she tells him the things she must that young Yamada didn't know - but he returns as Older Yamada to save Amamiya.
