@Amduscas The girl in the cover photo has been pretty inoffensively ... okay. Though she hasn't had the opportunity to do much else yet. Other than the maid she'd been "best" girl almost by default.

This doesn't deserve the rating it has. Honestly, it reminds me a lot of the Great Gatsby in that it implies being rich doesn't bring you happiness and that the life associated with it is hollow and empty. The women here are using him and are constantly backstabbing one another and that's the point. An arranged and forced relationship will not bring you joy, nor will one based on status and rank. We as the audience are MEANT to be disgusted with the shallowness of the girls and how they only use him for status, and how they don't seek a proper relationship but only think sex or sexuality will win him over, or even worse, feign a fake backstory to win him over. Honestly, it's genius if its a commentary on the harem genre and the association with status, and the disgust you feel is supposed to be well-earned.

For instance, what @Amduscas points out is correct, but it strengthens the themes of the work. Chapter 2 discusses how Natsuki believes he's paying people off to be his friends and how shallow and empty relationships come from that. The girls, how have no relation to the main character and simply are here for the money and are using him because of it. This is not a bad point by the author, but is meant to show how shallow and empty their relationship is, and how disenfranchised our MC is and rightfully so. This is NOT a story about getting over past trauma and finding ways to trust again, but this is a story about the emptiness and discontentment with wealth and how shallow people are from it.

Best ending would be MC commits suicide or runs away because he realizes how no matter where he goes, he will only be used for his wealth and status, and as long as he is associated to it, he will never find joy. Though I think that this warrants a higher rating, maybe because I don't care about the stupid smut scenes and more care about the characters and development from a literary perspective, but I think this the potential of having a great commentary in the vein of works like the Great Gatsby.

So far the characters range from frustrating to disgusting. I don't know if the old whore can ara ara hard enough to save it.

Kind of reminds me of "Kono naka ni hitori imouto ga iru" novel, anime, manga etc where the mc is the son of a tycoon and has to find a wife in his new school but one of them is secretly his little sister who he must somehow avoid picking, though you don't have a best girl bodyguard/butler Eksu who was pretty much the only thing that made that series enjoyable. at least not yet.
