It's true that spicy isn't actually a thing you taste. Kind of more like how you'd enjoy the texture of a food I guess. There is a fifth flavor we can taste though, "umami," which has been relatively recently recognized as such. Think I posted something about that last night on a different series. Right now it's still so new to the party you probably won't hear anyone talking about it basically ever outside of Japan.
